Topic: Cost of STIs

Despite continuing efforts to prevent STIs, and after dropping rates of infection throughout the ’90s, the rates of infection are now increasing. Statistically the Public Health Agency of Canada reports changes in rates of STIs including chlamydia, gonorrhea and infectious syphilis.

And what about statistics related to HIV/AIDS? In 2002, it was estimated that 56,000 Canadians were living with HIV/AIDS (12% increase over 1999). According to Leading Together: Canada takes Action on HIV/AIDS (2005-2010) between 1993 and 2003, HIV/AIDS related programs and services experienced a 43% increase in demand due to new infections and people living longer with the disease. It is estimated that the cost of every new infection of HIV/AIDS is $750,000 in direct and indirect costs.
As these statistics suggest, the work of health professionals to prevent and manage STIs is not only cost effective, it is critical to all Canadians to save, prolong and enhance lives.

Topic: World Health Organization and N-9

The World Health Organization recommends that the use of condoms lubricated with Nonoxynol-9 spermicide be discontinued.
The reason: in studies reviewed by WHO and other health organizations, individuals using N-9 lubricated condoms were at increased risk of HIV infection. Why? Nobody knows for sure, but researchers believe that N-9 changes the cell walls of tissue on contact –making it easier for individuals to become infected.
